Airlie Beach-The gateway to the Whitsundays
Airlie Beach is a small town in Queensland. From here, not only do most of the sailing tours to the famous Whitehaven beach, although it is home to the world-famous Heart reef. The riff in the form of a heart is one of the most beautiful reefs in the world.
Attractions in Airlie Beach
The Whitsundays should definitely have been seen in Australia, not only from the boat, but also from the air. Within 9 days I have actually done everything in Airlie Beach what you can do here:
Travel planning for Airlie Beach
Since my host family went on holiday, I also got a holiday in time and was able to choose a destination. Since the Whitsundays were at the top of the list and the time (September) was optimal, I decided to go to Airlie Beach.
I had 9 days and flew from Sydney to Proserpine on Fridays. From there we went by bus to Airlie Beach.
Since there is only one main road through Airlie Beach, you will be left here and the individual hostels will be called. They also help you unload your luggage and describe where you have to go.
I had booked an overnight stay at magnums before I started my 3 day Segeltourn on Saturday. After the sailing from Airlie Beach, I had changed the hostel because the magnums is rather basic and I liked the YHA better. In retrospect, it was a very good decision, as the YHA is very familiar and I had 3 girls in my room who worked here and immediately integrated myself into their circle of friends.
The Magnums hostel in Airlie Beach
In Airlie Beach it´s the same like in any other hostel in Australia: check-in is always 2pm. When I arrived at the magnums, I still had about 1.5 hours of time and therefore got a voucher for the luggage room (rather a container). Every half an hour someone comes, opens the containers and the you access your luggage.
The complex is very nice, small houses in a kind of rain forest and at the entrance there is a map so that you can find your dorm better.
In the middle of the complex is a BBQ station with table, hammock and free WiFi
Airlie Beach YHA
The YHA hostel is a bit further away from the bars and restaurant, but also offers silence and peace in the night.
For me this was the deciding point to book it, as well as the good reviews. As everything is within walking distance of Airlie, you can be in the next bar in 3 minutes.
The 3 girls in my room were here for several months and the whole hostel knew each other. As soon as I arrived I was immediately asked what I was doing and if I didn’t want to go away with them in the evening.
I spent my days in the lagoon or on the beach and the evenings with my new friends.
I can only recommend you to stay for a week in Airlie Beach and discover the Whitsundays! I have seen more in 7 days than the girls in 3 months and it was worth it!
